Daratech Blacklists a few more Press. UGS Opens up
In a somewhat formal announcement, Randall Newton at AECNews revealed that he had been refused access to the upcoming Daratech PLANT event. According to Randall, only 8 press are accredited for this event now. Randall attributed his 'blacklisting' to his ongoing contract-based relationship with Cyon and his editor position at Cyon's CADCAMNet publication. It gives rise to a whole conversation about where news is coming from and if it's being 'controlled'. I don't think Daratech are in such a position of wanting to control media outlets but rather are taking a view of preventing competition from attending. Either way it's a shame that Daratech feels insecure enough to prevent the competition from turning up, and has now been revealed in a way that only does Daratech's reputation damage.
So, talking of press not being welcome, UGS User group's PLM World has not welcomed the press in recent years but this week have revealed that they are planning, with UGS, to invite press to the newly named "UGS Connection Americas 2007 Users Conference" (aka. PLM World.) Alright, so I will avoid being rude about the new name...I like the UGS crew and don't wish to offend! But this is a great move and gives UGS the opportunity to be regarded as a little less 'stuffy' in their dealings with the press. Let's hope they leverage their chances here!
Personally I found the Daratech attitude a litte bit extreme for two reasons:
(1) the bad advertising generated on the blogosphere is by far bigger than the benefits of keeping Randall Newton out of the event. (Predictable!)
(2) In a Daratech conference attended by few hundred people, no secret can be so valuable to justify black listing someone like Randall Newton. (Please!)
On then other hand, if Randal Newton want to be treated as a journalist he should stay away from "extra money" coming, for example, from connections with Cyon Research. Or, if he likes the money, he should stop complaining about Daratech cutting him out.
